Honoring Ford Field’s timeless design and enduring impact

The Detroit Lions have captured national attention and admiration these past few years. Most notably, the team clinched the Number 1 seed in the NFC this season and are gearing up to host a playoff game at Ford Field this weekend. As lifelong fans, we couldn’t be more excited to cheer on our home team. While we celebrate their success, we reflect on the design of Ford Field—completed over 25 years ago—and how its innovative architecture has allowed it to remain a vibrant and integral part of Detroit today.

“I want to stand on the 50-yard line and know I’m in the city of Detroit!” said William Clay Ford Jr., Owner and Vice Chair of the Lions, when describing his vision for the team’s new home. In 2002, that vision became a reality with the opening of Ford Field, marking a new era in Lions history as the team moved from the Pontiac Silverdome to downtown Detroit. ROSSETTI was selected to design this state-of-the-art stadium and embrace the unwavering commitment to the city’s revitalization.

To honor the pride of the downtown experience, ROSSETTI incorporated the adjacent historic Hudson’s Warehouse—a Detroit landmark built in 1920—into the design, integrating the stadium seamlessly into the brick-clad surroundings. This thoughtful approach not only preserved a piece of history but also created some of the NFL’s best sightlines. The warehouse features luxury suites, the press box, restaurants, food courts, lounges, banquet facilities, and entertainment venues, reinforcing Ford Field as a hub of activity. An atrium greets visitors at the main entry, offering stunning views of the skyline from every seat in the bowl, reminding fans of the city’s enduring spirit.

Since its completion, Ford Field has hosted numerous events, including Super Bowl XL in 2006, NCAA tournaments, concerts, and more, showcasing its versatility and timeless appeal. In 2017, ROSSETTI collaborated with the Lions on a major reimagination of the suites and clubs, ensuring the stadium continues to meet modern demands. Beyond hosting games and events, Ford Field has been a catalyst for downtown Detroit’s revitalization, symbolizing resilience and growth. Alongside the Tigers, Red Wings, and Pistons, the Lions’ commitment to Detroit is evident, and Ford Field remains a cornerstone of the city’s identity and future.
