The USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center (NTC), home of the US Open since 1978, has evolved into a world-class venue that has witnessed many of tennis’s greatest moments. By 2009, however, the campus faced increasing competition from modernized Grand Slam venues and needed to address several challenges to remain at the forefront of sports and entertainment. Partnering with ROSSETTI, the USTA launched a reimagination of the entire site, which included phased improvements to the three main stadiums: Arthur Ashe Stadium, Louis Armstrong Stadium, and Grandstand. The master plan expanded the campus from 42 to 46 acres, creating valuable new space in the southeast corner. This expansion provided the opportunity to relocate and replace Grandstand, the third-largest stadium on campus, as part of the broader goal of creating a vibrant district and sports spectacle.
Although the stadium appears round, its design features 16 sides and a façade that rises higher on the southwest corner and lowers toward the northeast, offering unique views across the NTC campus. To maintain the intimacy and shade of the original Grandstand, sun studies guided the placement of seating, ensuring many fans enjoy shaded areas. The lower bowl, recessed into the earth, creates a close, intimate connection between players and fans. Inspired by the natural beauty of Corona Park, the façade is composed of 400 PTFE fabric panels that emulate the effect of peering through tree foliage, with varying levels of opacity and translucence that allow glimpses into and out of the stadium. Within Grandstand, retail and concessions enhance the fan experience, while surrounding picnic areas and plazas create a relaxed and inviting atmosphere.
Since its completion, Grandstand has contributed to the transformation of the NTC campus and elevated the US Open experience. In addition to being the world’s first LEED-certified tennis stadium, Grandstand has played a pivotal role in the record-breaking attendance of the US Open year after year. The innovative design addresses the needs of fans, athletes, and stakeholders, transforming the tournament into a dynamic celebration of world-class tennis, cultural vibrancy, and social engagement.
