As one of college hockey’s marquee venues in the country, Munn Ice Arena’s location is prominent at Michigan State University as a legacy venue within the athletics campus. The new addition, located on the south side of the arena, provides a new public “front door” to better connect with the surrounding context. The updated facility also elevates the Spartan Hockey team spaces and administrative offices to exceed other recently completed collegiate hockey facilities.
The addition extends toward the intramural fields and integrates a plaza and sidewalks to enhance pedestrian flow across the athletic campus. In a commitment to Spartan Hockey, the new entry includes the Ron Mason Hall of History, an interactive exhibition space proudly displaying the university’s hockey legacy and recognizing past players and coaches. The ground floor features the players’ weight room and allowed for the relocation of the administrative offices from below grade to the ground floor, providing natural light and campus views to both spaces.
The team facilities have been specifically designed to prioritize the Spartan Hockey program. As a new home for the team, the addition provides cutting-edge performance and recruitment opportunities to reach championship potential. These hockey-specific spaces include locker rooms, training and hydrotherapy rooms, shooting stations, stick and skate services and a player lounge. The use of materials, graphic design and signage integrates the identity of Michigan State University with the sport of hockey, creating a place of pride and impact for the team on a day-to-day basis. Munn Ice Arena is now a superior venue that supports the student athletes as individuals, elite athletes and extraordinary teammates.
